School district Web site hacked
Martha Garcia, Loomis News Editor
Wayne Geide

Visitors to the local elementary school district’s Web site recently could have said, “It’s all Greek to me” and been right on target. That’s because hackers have attacked the Loomis Union School District’s Web site twice this month.

The latest hacking took place last Friday, when visitors to the site were met with a message in a foreign language that Wayne Geide, the district’s technology coordinator, said is Greek. The message used the word "porno" repeatedly.

Paul Johnson, district superintendent, said the Web site was shut down both times as soon as the breach was discovered.

“We are in the process of moving to a new network server,” Johnson said.

Geide explained there are companies that “search for different vulnerabilities and they must have found one on our site and got in.”

Geide said he suspects the first time the site was hacked “they put some type of file on our server, to give them access back in.”

To solve the problem, “We’re in the process of rebuilding and posting our Web site a different way,” he said.

Geide added that it was the same hackers both times and they are “definitely out of the country” and “left their trademarks on the district site that redirected people to their site, which was all Greek.”

Geide said he has been involved in the Internet technology business for over 15 years and joined the district two years ago. In addition to being responsible for the district’s Web site, he coordinates a lot of the IT curriculum and instruction and teaches technology to teachers.

The site now has minimal information. Johnson said that anyone needing information should call the district office Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 652-1800.

Each school site will open its office as of Aug. 3 and the fall term begins Aug. 20, Johnson said.

How much does he make a year.

to much...

Here's the most important question of all: did the hackers access any information pertaining to the students or their families?

Is 'porno' a Greek word? I thought it came from Chicago.

If anyone can fix the problem, Wayne can. Show those Greeks who is boss!
