Medical marijuana sales proposed for Loomis
Urgency meeting 6 p.m., tonight, July 21 at town hall
Joyia Emard Loomis News staff writer

A Colfax man’s proposal to open a medicinal marijuana dispensary in Loomis has prompted the town council to call an urgency meeting for tonight.

A special meeting will be help at 6 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, July 21 at town hall. According to Perry Beck, town manager, the Loomis Town Council is expected to vote on “the adoption of a 45-day moratorium as an urgency measure in order to prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries.”

Beck said the town needs “further review of the legality, practical ramifications and possible secondary effects of such a land use.”

In a letter dated July 17, Robert Dearwester, of Colfax, informed the council that he intends to apply for a “Nonprofit Medicinal Cannabis Collective Business License.”

Dearwester he doesn’t have a location in mind, but “wants to have a conversation with the council.” He said typically the shops are located near other medical facilities or in an industrial area.

Dearwater told the Loomis News that he chose Loomis because he comes from a small town. He also said he does not currently, and has never operated a medicinal marijuana shop.

Dearwater said that there is a shop in Colfax that has been operating for five years and Nevada City recently approved a medicinal marijuana shop.

I think that flat out prohibiting a medical marijuana collective with a closed mind would be a mistake and done out of fear from the unknown. I do believe that a 45 day moratorium would be beneficial in helping to create some rules and regulations. These businesses can be so discreet that the average person wouldn't even know that it existed. The tax revenue that could be generated from such a business could be very beneficial to the town.

HEYYYEELL NO! They can cut my city services and raise my taxes, but don't bring drugs into my town. This Colfax man needs to keep his drug laced brownies in his own town.

I worked as a heavy equipment operator for 35 years and when my body started to break down in my final years with very painfull arthritis in both shoulders and neck, I was given pain killers by my doctors that I didn't like to take. This was thier pain management for me and the sideafects were terrible for me. But onice I retired I looked into medical marijuana, saw my doctor, who gave me a perscription and I gave it a try. I reduced my pain pills by a least 80%. I'll tell you now that I wouldn't buy medical marijuana off the street and I don't have to, because it is legal and approved by a majority of the voters. we have to get over this closed mindedness and have some compassion for the people who could use medical marijuana as an alternative to other perscribed drugs. But do take time to get all the regulations in place with no loopholes. good luck to the young man.

People that are uninformed and close minded drive me crazy. My mom has terminal cancer. She was on many prescribed drugs for pain and nausea. The pain meds kept landing her in the hospital from the side affects. We finally took her to a doctor and he prescribed medical marijuana. Since she has stopped the pain pills and substituted the marijuana as necessary she has not been in the hospital again. It totally controls her naseau. Every morning before she would wake and and throw up. To radlandon, until you have watched a love one suffer the way I have you should hold your judgements. What if there were no place for her to purchase her LEGALLY PRESCRIBED medication?

I agree with other posters that there needs to be regulations that govern the operation of this type of business, but we passed the law for good reasons, now lets make it less difficult for those that need it to gain access.

Times change, you either grow with them or go live in isolation.

I wonder how other medical facilities or businesses in an industrial area would feel about having a medicinal marijuana shop nearby? From what I understand they got robbed on a regular basis. There's a neighbor of my folks who has a license to grow it in this yard so that he doesn't even have to go to a medicinal marijuana shop, and he and his kids have to sleep in the backyard with a shotgun to guard their plants 24/7. How much crime do you think this would bring to Loomis?

Is this guy's last name Dearwester or Dearwater?
