Del Oro grads debut film at Sacramento festival
'Sensored' is first feature film for KeJo Productions
The bright lights of Hollywood lured two Del Oro High School graduates to the film industry. Their hard work has paid off with a star-studded premiere planned for their new movie, “Sensored.” The feature film, co-produced by 1988 Del Oro grads Eric Mansur and Jo Haskin, and her husband Kevin Haskin, of Kejo Productions, will be screened at 8 p.m. Friday, July 24, at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento. It will open the 10th Annual Sacramento Film and Music Festival, a two-weekend long, all-genre international film festival. Haskin said “Sensored” is a “dramatic thriller that captures the steady unraveling of a children’s book author’s twisted, lurid psyche.” The film – shot entirely in Roseville, Rocklin and Sacramento – stars Robert Picardo, who appeared in the films “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Stargate Atlantis.” According to Jo Haskin, Picardo is also known for his television role in “China Beach” (as Dr. Dick Richards) and was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Coach Cutlip in the “Wonder Years.” In addition to Picardo, “Sensored” stars Brian Rife, Sarah Knowlton, Michelle Page, Chase, Anthony Hodge, David Fine and Mary Mackey. In the film, Picardo, as Wade, struggles with his perception of reality while trying to keep his frayed mind from unraveling. The screenplay for “Sensored” was written by Kevin Haskin and directed by Ryan Todd. Jo and Kevin Haskin founded KeJo Productions, LLC, based in Roseville, in 2004. Jo Haskin was known as Joanne Bianchi when she lived in Penryn and went to Del Oro. After attending Sacramento State University, she got into the film business “kind of by mistake,” but she had “always loved movies,” she said. Her first acting job was as an extra (a honeymooner at Cal Neva) in the 1994 film “Cobb” with Tommy Lee Jones. “I just kind of fell in love with the process,” Haskin said. However, she didn’t think she’d be able to make a living at it. As an intern, Haskin had the opportunity to work with different casting directors. When her husband become a screenwriter about 10 years ago, the couple decided to shoot a short film. “Training Wheels,” written and directed by Kevin Haskin, won the 2004 Best Family Youth Drama at the Dam Film Festival in Boulder, Nev., she said. Jo Haskin was nominated for an Emmy in 2008 for “Life,” a public service announcement she co-produced for the Project Cuddle organization that helps prevent infants from being abandoned. The film was shot in Rocklin and Sacramento. According to Haskin, after graduating from Del Oro, Masur went off to Hollywood and film school. “He ended up working with one of the largest producers in LA, Laurence Mark, producer of ‘Dream Girls’ and ‘Jerry Maguire,’” she said. “After eight to 10 years working in LA, he decided to move back to Sacramento and it gave the opportunity to work on a film here.” KeJo has made mostly short films and commercials, Haskin said, and “Sensored” is their first feature film. A feature film is anything over 40 minutes, and “Sensored” runs 94 minutes, she explained. After a decade working in film, Haskin still bubbles over with enthusiasm for her work and now, the upcoming screening. “I just really love the opportunity to provide people – actors – jobs,” she said.
