More Penryn chicken deaths blamed on marauding black bears

This bear and its two cubs are being blamed for a rash of chicken killings in the rural Penryn area over the past three weeks. The photo was taken in the yard of a Penryn resident.

More chickens have been reported killed by marauding bears in the Penryn area.

In the most damaging coop break-in to date, longtime Penryn resident Terry Wicks said 18 of her chickens were killed after a bear ripped off locks and broke down a door before cornering them in the coop.

The attack took place about two weeks ago, Wicks said. A neighbor also lost four roosters in a similar attack around the same time, she said.

Fish and Game found tracks and claw prints on the neighbor’s property and Wicks said she found prints on her land. The strength used to break the door in two indicated to here a bear was responsible, she said. Traps have now been set to help avoid a recurrence.

The Wicks property is located on Rock Springs Road, on the north side of Interstate 80. Other attacks have occurred on the south side of the freeway, near Rock Springs Road. To get to the north side, bears would have to travel a tunnel under the highway.

Wicks has lived on Rock Springs Road since 1961 and said it’s the first bear on her property during that time.

Is it time to call out the Granite Bay Teen Bow and Arrow Troops?? They can do it especially if they bring their Drum and Bugle corp with them. (pots and pans are also allowed)

If you live in the country and raise a food source for those who have no supermarkets, what do you expect? I hate to hear of anything being killed but to paint bears as marauding villains is not fair. I feel badly for the chickens who have no choice but to live in coops and I have compassion for the person losing them but lets not make the bears out to be anything more than what they are...wild creatures also forced to live in a way that isn't by choice (amongst humans and their choices). I'm sorry for your loss, Ms. Wicks.

So,,,,,,,if they sniffed a pie on the way would it be a rampage or would they still be marauding?

I laugh every time I read a story about these bears. They have managed to elude all efforts to capture, trap or contain them and they don't even know they are doing a good job.

Bears can become very destructive in their quest for food, they usually don't come down this low but there is always an exception, there have been a few sightings recently and they were not these bears.. More than likely they will find their way back to the Lake and head up north towards their home ground.

If you see them call the DFG at 1(916) 358-2900, take pictures from a distance if you want but DO NOT get between the sow and the cubs, you will be putting your well being at risk.

They are chickens they make more Geez! We are invading them not the other way around. In my time here the pastures or old orchards off of Rock Springs/Brennans & Newcastle road have been cleared to make way for large tacky homes. I dont know what the big deal is we have coyotes leave half a goat behind and eat small domestic pets nobody is writting a story on that. Laws of nature. These things happen its not a rampage, it is just how it is. If you dont know better than to stay out of their way maybe you need to move down the hill a bit.

LocalGirl1976 i cant agree with you more..now if only the bears could control the deer population it would be great...

Mountain Lions could help control the deer population......

Watchit...pots and pans and drums and bugles are not acceptable. If we want these kids to get the killing fever, there has to be much more bloodletting than what noisemakers provide. Making the problem go away without anything suffering is just...well...silly. Remember, real men don't use cameras.

I have a solution....I have a bear tag that needs to be used i am available.Hehe.

I have one, too!

Please take notice; these bears are wild animals that eat when, where and however they can, they have no conscience and regarding mother bears with cubs, there are no negotiations. YOU WILL LOSE!

The fact is that these bears have now found a food source other than their natural source and a fed bear is a dead bear. Once they learn where that source is, they won't go back to eating bugs and berries. A lot of bears in the Tahoe area don't hibernate any more because they know they only have to go yo the nearest house for a meal and do considerable damage while doing so. The population needs better management. The State of California's preferred control method is hunting and that is why the state issues bear hunting tags.

nicklbag I heard that alot dead buffalo deer and bear were brought down by arrows. And I believe there was a lot of hootin and hollerin going on also. My self I did all my hunting with my old "Dirty-Dirty" also known as a winchester 30-30 with open sights, No high powered rifle with telescopic or laser sights quads or dirt bics. and fancy blinds to hang out in. We did have horses once in awhile to haul the deer out. But most of the time it was either drag them out or cut them up and start packing. And by the way although we had fun it was 90% for the meat love venison. I don't know if that qualifies as real men but started hunting at age 12.

Watchit, your story is very familiar. Never used a blind, no 400 yard shots, lots of good stalking, glassing and making sure that the shot would bring the deer down cleanly. Passed a lot of shots but never lost a wounded deer either. Although over the years I got a number of guns, that old 30-30 is still the best for whitetail in the woods. Don't do bears, antelope or mulies, just whitetail and elk and hopefully some day I will be lucky to be drawn and will get me another moose, best meat I've ever tasted, I use a .338 for them.

Good hunting
