Accident backed up I-80 traffic
22-year-old driver in ‘fair condition

A Sacramento man was in “fair condition” after he crashed into the center of Interstate 80 Friday afternoon.

Jose Biedra, 22, was transported to Sutter Roseville Hospital with complaints of chest, back and neck pains after the tan Honda Accord he was driving crashed into the center divide of westbound Interstate 80 at Gilardi Road, according to Officer David Martinez, California Highway Patrol spokesman.

Martinez said earlier it was reported that the driver of the Honda had suffered a heart attack. Officers later discovered that had not happened.

Biedra reportedly told officers that another vehicle had swerved into his lane, which in turn caused him to veer out of the far left lane and hit the center divide.

Martinez said that several drivers, including a nurse, stopped along the side of the road to assist.

The cause of the accident, which backed up traffic to Newcastle for about half an hour, remains under investigation, Martinez said.

Why were there at least 4 fire trucks at the scene, also at least 5 law enforcement vehicles? The single ambulance was appropriate as there was only one person involved. We all wonder why or taxes are so extreme for different fire districts. It might be the time to take a look at why so many emergency units are dispatched to a single vehicle accident, especially fire department vehicles and personal.

Fourgen- I will tell you exactly why, it was reported on Eastbound I-80 near Penryn Rd (which was wrong) and person was trapped.

Loomis Fire, Penryn Fire were started, Then it was reported- Westbound I-80 between Newcastle Road and Penryn Road, Newcastle Fire started.... thinking separate accidents... Finally they found 1 accident at Westbound I-80 and Gilardi Overpass.

Since the accident was in Penryn's District and Penryn responded with Engine and Rescue( carries the jaws of life).

You need alot of resources on freeways incidents because JERKS do not slow down, huge safety issue for patient and crews.

Biggest problem.... Cell Phone Callers don't know geographical directions, don't know if they are eastbound or westbound.. and they usually have no idea where they are at on the freeway... So in short- Fourgen PAY YOUR TAXES and be thankful that the fire dept responds at all, NO thanks to the cheap, whiners, who don't support their local fire department which run on a shoe string budget in Placer County.

Well said firewatcher...fourgen don't get me started on complainers like you! The tax that you pay for fire service is so much smaller than you think you really pay and funds pennies of your local fire district (depending on what part of the county you lay your head down at night). I am so sick of watching you complain about the taxes that you think are "Extreme". Our county has many local government districts that provide superior service for the budgets that they have compared to the large cities and larger depts. These districts carry special tools that require special training that requires special firemen to operate that your pidly tax dollars do not pay for, not to mention the reduced staffing because it might increase your "Extreme" taxes. Just so they can cut you out of your car safely, fast, and efficiently after you drove your car into a pole while not paying attention talking onto your cell phone! So next time before you jump the gun and really gather the larger picture, be thankful that such a response would come to you as well.

I agree with fourgen. Not so much about the taxes, but about the FD responding to every fender bender. If a taillight lens is broken, move the cars out of the road! The FD trucks all show up and block lanes...many times causing more crashes as travelers have to slam on their brakes unexpectedly. Cops direct traffic, tow trucks take the cars, ambulances take the injured. Money saving suggestion: Stay in the fire house unless there's a fire! Their purpose and special equipment is to PUT OUT FIRES. For many decades they responded to fires only, and society did just fine. Then they wanted to expand their power and influence, and it's been downhill ever since. Causing chain reaction crashes might be great for job security, but not so much for the quality of life.

Nicklbag- I don't know where you live, but it must be in a cave. For many years the fire service has been the dumping ground for every whiner in society.. From bay area people coming to the country and whining about burn piles ( Placer Air Pollution defaults to local fire depts to enforce) Every time stupid people lock themselves out of their car or house- they call the fire dept.. Everytime a storm comes and knocks down trees into roadway or electrical lines- they call the fire dept...Everytime they cannot get up off the floor or toilet because they are too weak or fat- they call the fire dept to help them up.......Everytime someone dumps paint or oil,anti-freeze down the gutter.. they call the fire dept..... I hope you get my point !!!! Nicklbag..........The fire service responds to any request from citizens... and Yes, it would be nice if other agencies handled their issues but the fire service IS 24/7-365... You owe Fire and Law personnel a great thanks for dealing with scum and whiners as much as they do.. daily !!!! and then get insulted by people like you- fourgen and nicklbag...

Go on a ride-along with fire or law.... see what they do.. daily.. see who they deal with, kind of people... Then you can have a opinion !!!!

1stOnscene/firefighter, there is nothing wrong with protecting ones job. That being said, where is the communication between departments? The particular accident in this case could have been handle with less response time by Newcastle as any emergency westbound between Newcastle and Penryn Rd off ramp is much closer in travel time then from Penryn. The problem that has been created with so many different fire departments that are no longer volunteer is the manpower and equipment that is duplicated. The "four" trucks at the scene caused more confusion and unnecessary panic braking in both directions, that it actual became a hazardous situation. Neither of you seem to see a correlation between operating cost /manpower and taxes and all you want to do chastize me for complaining. All I can say is: Wow.
