Del Oro choir show tonight
FREE ADMISSION
7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9 Del Oro Performing Arts Center Admission is free Long before "Glee" became a hit television show, Del Oro High School students found it socially acceptable to join the choir. Now, those trendsetting teens will sing their hearts out during Del Oro’s winter choir show tonight, Dec. 9. Traditional holiday favorites, plus some jazzed-up Christmas carols, are on the program for the performance, which features chorus and concert choir students. Students have spent hours rehearsing in anticipation of a full house. According to sophomore Stephanie Richardson, of Penryn, a member of the concert choir, her favorite song is the all-girl performance of a Spanish carol. “Christmas is my favorite holiday. I like the feeling of gearing up for it,” she said. Junior Christine Cleveland, of Loomis, another concert choir member, said she loves “the energy everyone gives off” during the performance. Jessyka Grossi, of Ophir, is a sophomore and a first-timer in the concert group. Last year, she was in the chorus class. “There’s a lot more structure in the concert choir class. People seem to learn everything a little faster,” Jessyka said. Cole Perez, a senior from Penryn, is in the class for the second year. “You get to mess around and have fun and be serious,” he said. Cole is just one of a number of choir guys who are also athletes. He is a standout player on the baseball team. His classmate, junior Brandon Acuna, of Roseville, is the wide receiver on Del Oro’s football team. “It’s pretty cool that you can sing and play sports,” Brandon said. Mark Burriesci, of Loomis, is a junior and also a member of the wrestling team. He said choir offers him a chance to have fun with his friends. The male concert choir members will perform Jingle Bells. “That’s my favorite. We have a cool harmony,” said senior Chris Ross, of Penryn. Pavel Kravchuk, Del Oro’s new choir and chorus teacher, said he likes the whole spirit of the holiday show. “It feels kind of old fashioned, especially since we’re in a small town,” he said. Kravchuk was born in Ukraine and came to the United States at the age of 10. He earned a degree in piano from California State University, Sacramento and is credentialed to teach music. He said this is his first school teaching job and he’s “learning a lot.”
