Loomis football stars become super citizens
Six boys help raise $10,000 for Shriners Hospital for Children
Six Loomis boys are not only super athletes, they’re also super citizens, and they sport Super Bowl-size rings to prove it. The young men competed in, and won, two Shriners all-star football games; they also raised $10,000 to benefit Shriners Hospital For Children, including the one in Sacra-mento. Jahaan Nargussi, Michael Moore and Danny Becker, all from Franklin School; Tanner Woods and Dylan Kainrath, both from Placer Elementary School; and Santino Garcia, from Loomis Grammar School, worked together to raise the money. “The money will help all of the unfortunate kids, like the ones that got hurt, or have or-thopedic problems,” said running back Dylan. For weeks in November, the young athletes spent their after-school hours going door-to-door or standing in front of Raley’s to raise the money. They solicited donations and sold game tickets to benefit the hospital that treats children suffering from burns and pediatric and congenital conditions. “One lady put a $100-bill in at Raley’s,” said linebacker Jahaan. Jahaan also said the Rocklin Rotary Club purchased 40 tickets to send 30 youth from Koinonia Foster Homes and their 10 chaperones to the game. Michael, quarterback, said that supporters were very generous in their donations and that a large number of Loomis people attended the game to cheer them on. Santino said his dad, Allen Garcia, sold a lot of tickets at the nonprofit, after-school gym he founded called Coaching Kids. It is located in Rocklin. The eighth-grade boys all played on the division-winning Del Oro Junior Golden Eagles Midget football team. The teens were chosen as all stars to play in the Shriners Youth Bowl. Their team won that game and then traveled to Florida to compete in the first-ever Youth East-West Shriners Bowl, where they won again. Michael said the most memorable moment was when their team won the game in Florida 36-34 in the last 14 seconds of the game. “It was amazing,” he said. Last week, the boys received their large, engraved rings from the Shriners and the ath-letes are wearing them with pride. The boys’ saga featured some ironies and twists. Danny, whom teammates credit with helping win the first bowl game, broke his toe in an accident at school one week before the Florida game and was unable to compete or go on the trip. “It was terrible. I was pretty disappointed when the doctor told me I couldn’t do any sports for a month,” Danny, who plays receiver, said. One player had no idea that one of his own family members would soon need the services of Shriners Hospital. Santino, who played on the line, would find out first-hand how the hospital helps children. His niece Alexis Garcia, who lives with his family, suffered second-degree burns on her hand from a hot-glue gun and doctors sent her to the Sacramento Shriners Hospital for treatment. Santino’s mother, Mary Garcia, said her granddaughter is healing and has weekly appointments at Shriners and may still need surgery. Tanner, whose position is defensive end, said that working with Shriners and learning what they do at the hospital has left him “humbled” and “grateful for the abilities I have.” The boys all agree that this has been the biggest event, so far, in their young lives. Now, they have the rings to remember it by. --------------------------- SHRINERS HOSITAL FOR CHILDREN 2425 Stockton Boulevard Sacramento, CA 95817 453-2049 Nonprofit hospital for children up to age 18.
