Body found along I-80 ID'd as Grass Valley woman
The woman's body found along westbound Interstate 80 just west of Eureka Road at about 4:30 this morning has been identified as 47-year-old Vickie Janell Scott of Grass Valley. Investigators believe Scott died after being struck by a vehicle and thrown some 200 feet. It's yet to be determined whether she got out or was thrown from a vehicle, or whether she entered the freeway as a pedestrian. Both the Atlantic Street onramp and one lane of 80 were closed for some time following the incident. An investigation was ongoing as of late this morning. Anyone with information should call the Newcastle CHP office at (916) 663-3344.

RIP....
How awful!
Sad story all around. No matter what the circumstances may be, he should have stopped. I don't believe for a second that one would not know they hit a human being. Also, after hitting any unknown object at a high rate of speed, wouldn't you stop and see what, or who you just hit? Or at least check for major damage to your vehicle?? She could have been trying to flag down help for all we know. I see no reason to blame the victim. Accidents do happen and when they do, it is the responsibility of the driver to stop, call 911 and attempt to help a fellow human being.
stellablue: I am not blaming the victim, we have to wait & see what the outcome of the investigation is. But recently it seems there are more than a few pedistrians have been hit by motorist (no fault of the motorist) these people are either acting like deer & run out in front of the motorist or they are standing in the street. In this paticular area of I-80 there is a safer route over the top to Eureka. As stated before I checked this out last night there is pleanty of room to stay out of traffic. Keep in mind this is just a kid that hit her, either he did not know he hit a person or he just freaked out fled. We can all say I would get out & check or I would stop but the truth is we really dont know what we would do until in that situtation. But he still turned himself in and is taking responsiblity for the accident he should at least get credit for that. A coward would have kept his secret.
LocalGirl1976- I could not agree with you more. There are too many what if's and shoulda coulda wouldas.... the fact is it was a dark freeway, nobody expects a person to be on it at 4 something in the am. I can not imagine what the poor guy is going through right now. I will be interested to see what comes of all this.
There is room behind the construction barriers & the guardrail. She was in the road.
LocalGirl,
Yeah the victim could be a fault but hitting someone and then driving off and not trying to call for help and staying there or helping that person yourself is the worst possible thing anyone could do. It over shadows the victims fault.
Wildfire13: I already stated the hit & run was wrong but he's young & freaked out. He did man up & turn himself in which is more than most people would have done. I just am tired of reading stories of pedistrians getting hit, injured or killed when they run out in the road or are in traffic. It has happend far too frequently lately especially on Hwy. 49. Everybody points the finger at the driver when its the pedistrains fault. These motorists lives will be changed forever because they injuried or kill someone who was where they did not belong, how is that right. The pedistrians are taking not only their lives into their hands but the life of a unsuspecting person just on their way somewhere.
I am just having a hard time accepting that someone will be charged with manslaughter when they were obeying the rules. In this case charge him with the hit & run for sure but manslaughter no. J-Walking is illegal for a reason because it is dangerous there are signs saying NO PEDESTRIANS when entering the freeways, she had to walk right past that sign before she met her fate. I am not trying to be heartless I do feel for her families loss but I feel there is another side to stories like this. Food for thought, not everybody will agree but my 2 cents is free.
Not to sound uncaring, but ya ever notice where the memorial flowers, crosses, and candles are placed by pedestrians killed by vehicles? On the side of the road. What should be done is a big red "X" placed at the exact spot.....the middle of the road....Pedestrians more often than not are crossing on the middle of the road illegally.
