See "Beauty and the Beast Jr.” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, and Saturday, March 6, at Placer Elementary School. Admission is free; donations accepted at the door. Hope Lutheran School, which offers instruction in grades kindergarten through eighth-grade, will hold an open house at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 4. This is an opportunity to tour the classrooms and meet the staff. A free dinner featuring authentic Brazilian cuisine will also be served. The school, located at 7117 Hope Way in Penryn, is also offering free tuition for children entering kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year. The musical “Little Shop of Horrors” will be performed by the Del Oro High School drama department at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, and March 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13. Tickets, available at the door, are $12 for adults, $10 for students and children under 12.

A “Scouting for Food’ drive will be conducted Saturday, March 6, when Boy Scouts go door-to-door collecting non-perishable food items for the local food closet. Donations can also be dropped off from 9 a.m. to noon on March 6 at the Loomis Grammar School parking lot.

The 56th Annual Oriental Food Bazaar will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Saturday, March 6, in the Del Oro High School cafeteria. Guests can eat in or take out the kushiyaki, chow mein, chicken teriyaki, sushi and baked goods. Sumie Ward will perform a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.

A Tostada Bingo Night is set for 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Loomis Veterans Memorial Hall. Tickets are $15 each; admission is free for children age 5 and under. Tickets include a shredded beef tostada dinner, dessert, beverage ticket and bingo game packet. Proceeds benefit Soroptimist International of Loomis Basin programs. A crab feed, with live music, takes place Sunday, March 7, at the Blue Goose Fruit Shed. Doors open at 3 p.m.; dinner will be served at 4 p.m. Tickets are $55 at the door. Proceeds benefit HDSA research. For more information, call Madalyn Kruger at 927-4400.

Crafty Treasures presents it Spring Faire from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 12, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at Loomis Veterans Memorial Hall. The boutique will feature handmade and unique gifts and holiday decorations. For more information, call 726-1672.

The Franklin School Parent Teacher Club will host its annual dinner auction, “Escape to Paradise,” at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at the Granite Bay Country Club. Proceeds benefit programs such as sports, art and technology at the Loomis school. Tickets, which include cocktails, dinner and dessert, are $45 each. A live auction will also be held. The Literacy Support Council will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, March 22, at the Loomis Library. The council provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring for English-speaking adults who wish to improve their reading and writing skills.

Caltrans will hold an open house about upcoming projects to increase the vertical clearance of eight overcrossing on Interstate 80, including those at Brace, Horseshoe Bar, King, Penryn, Gilardi and Newcastle roads, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the Loomis Depot. Sign up now for the Loomis Lions Club Golf Tournament, to benefit Boy Scout Troop 12. It will be held Saturday, May 8, at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The entry fee is $100 per person or $550 for a sponsorship package. All golfers get a barbecue dinner. Non-golfer barbecue tickets are $15 each. The Third Annual Gardeners’ Gathering will be presented by Placer County Master Gardeners from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at the Blue Goose Fruit Shed. The Loomis Basin Dolphins Swim Team will hold tryouts and registration for new swimmers from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Del Oro High School pool. Swimmers from age 6 and under to 18 are eligible. Swimmers will need goggles and a towel, provide a birth certificate and medical insurance information, and be accompanied by a parent. Registration fees start at $265 for one swimmer; there are discounts for family members.

The CORE Placer Charter School is enrolling students for grades kindergarten through 12. The tuition-free school offers home and independent study, as well as virtual and online distance learning. For more information, call (530) 346-8340.

The Tax-Aide Program is offering free federal and state tax preparation by appointment only on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at the Loomis Library. Appointments are by reservations only; call 652-5840. The service, sponsored by the IRS and AARP, is available to all taxpayers with no age or membership restrictions. All returns are filed electronically and fast refunds are available by direct deposit. Those who have farm or property income or home offices are not eligible for this service.
